Video Integration in Retail: Enhancing the Customer Experience Through Strategic Digital Displays

Video and digital displays can educate customers, demonstrate products, communicate promotions, reinforce a brand story, and create a more engaging retail experience when they are thoughtfully integrated into the store design.

Digital video display integrated into a retail store environment

Video has become an increasingly important part of the modern retail environment. Digital screens can educate customers, demonstrate products, communicate promotions, reinforce a brand story, create atmosphere, and provide a more engaging shopping experience.

However, simply installing television screens throughout a store does not necessarily improve the customer experience. Effective retail video integration requires careful planning of screen locations, sizes, content, viewing angles, sound, power, connectivity, and relationship to the surrounding merchandise and architecture.

At Grant Retail Design, we incorporate video and digital displays into the overall retail design process, helping retailers determine where screens will have the greatest impact while ensuring they work naturally with the store's layout, fixtures, lighting, signage, and branding.

Start With the Purpose

Before deciding where to put a screen, it is important to determine what the screen is supposed to accomplish.

Retail video can serve many purposes, including:

  • Demonstrating products
  • Showing lifestyle content
  • Educating customers
  • Promoting new products
  • Communicating special offers
  • Reinforcing the brand
  • Providing entertainment
  • Showing social media content
  • Creating an immersive environment
  • Supporting events and special promotions

Grant Retail Design helps determine the role video will play within the store so that screens become useful elements of the customer experience rather than distractions.

Choose the Right Location

Screen placement is one of the most important aspects of video integration.

A screen hidden behind fixtures may have little impact. A screen placed directly in a customer's path may create congestion or become visually overwhelming.

Grant Retail Design evaluates customer circulation, sightlines, viewing distances, fixture locations, ceiling heights, lighting conditions, and merchandise displays when determining screen locations.

Screens may be positioned on feature walls, behind checkout counters, above merchandise displays, within custom fixtures, in window displays, or as large-scale digital focal points.

The location should support the purpose of the content.

Some years ago I designed a retail sporting goods store on the main street in Coronado, CA. The shop was long and thin so I put the warehouse, offices and dressing rooms in the rear of the shop and the back wall of the shop wound up around 50 feet from the front door. On that back wall I placed a large screen TV and my customer played videos of sports all day long. I called him after a few weeks to see how things were going and as we chatted about every 3 minutes I could hear honking from the main street in front of his store. I asked what the honking was all about and apparently the cars would stop for the red light near his shop and the car in front of his store would start watching the sports on the screen in his shop, would not watch for the green light and the drivers behind him would have to honk to get the car moving. Turned out to be a nice screen for his customers and the drivers passing by.

We specified several screens at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA. They used one of the screens to endlessly play a 30 minute clip of the President telling funny stories. The staff eventually got a little bored but the customers loved it. Sometimes redundant media can be a real winner.

The Grant Retail Design Approach

At Grant Retail Design, video integration is treated as part of the overall retail environment rather than simply an IT installation.

We can help coordinate:

  • Screen location and placement
  • Screen sizes and orientations
  • Video walls
  • Feature displays
  • Digital signage
  • Product demonstration screens
  • Window displays
  • Custom video fixtures
  • Viewing angles and sightlines
  • Lighting coordination
  • Audio considerations
  • Power and connectivity requirements
  • Technology coordination
  • Integration with branding and merchandising

Our objective is to use technology strategically to make the store more engaging, informative, and memorable.

The best retail video doesn't simply entertain customers—it gives them a reason to stop, look, learn, and engage with the brand.

Whether you are opening a new store, remodeling an existing location, launching a flagship environment, or looking for ways to modernize your retail experience, Grant Retail Design can help determine how video and digital displays can be incorporated into the store in a way that supports the brand, enhances merchandise presentation, and improves the overall customer experience.
